This review looks at the role of an alkaline diet in health. Pubmed was searched looking for articles on pH, potential renal acid loads, bone health, muscle, growth hormone, back pain, vitamin D and chemotherapy. Many books written in the lay literature on the alkaline diet were also reviewed and evaluated in light of the published medical literature. There may be some value in considering an alkaline diet in reducing morbidity and mortality from chronic diseases and further studies are warranted in this area of medicine.

Reported incidents of the use of nutritional supplements containing deer antler velvet by athletes has increased significantly in recent years. The supplements have been reported to contain insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), which is a banned substance included on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) prohibited list. The presence of deer and human IGF-1 was tested in six commercially available supplements.

The peak area from each MRM transition was used to calculate the product ion ratios relative to the most abundant transition. Product ion ratios measured in the supplements were matched to ratios measured in purified protein standards. A match to human IGF-1 was identified for all the MRM transitions measured in four of the supplements tested.

The presence of a pharmaceutical protein, human IGF-1, was confirmed in four commercially available products sold as all natural, nutritional supplements. These methods can be used to screen additional products to further prevent the illegal sale of adulterated supplements. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Redox-regulated processes are relevant to wound healing. A balance between bioavailable nitric oxide (NO) concentration and a level of oxidative and nitroxidative stress in wounds may be crucial in wound repair. The highly beneficial effect of bioavailable NO is attributed to scavenging of superoxide, which is the main component of oxidative stress. Also, the high level of NO can influence angiogenesis and endothelial/skeletal muscle cell remodeling and proliferation. However, under conditions of excessive and prolonged production of oxygen in wounds, the supplementation of NO can be evolved in significant increase in nitroxidative stress. Here we briefly review the role of NO, and focus on oxygen and peroxynitrous acid (major components of oxidative and nitroxidative stress respectively) in the normal and impaired process of wound healing.

The importance of an improved response of skeletal muscle protein synthesis to the ingestion of amino acids is obvious for individuals across the age spectrum, and particularly the elderly, because skeletal muscle mass declines with advancing age.

Ingestion of extra leucine may be particularly important for the stimulation of skeletal muscle protein synthesis in the elderly, because evidence from animal studies indicates that skeletal muscle protein synthesis becomes less responsive to the stimulatory effects of leucine with aging.

The purpose of this study was to determine the acute effects of two different EAA mixtures on skeletal muscle protein metabolism in elderly and young subjects, a mixture that is based on the distribution of EAAs in whey protein (~26% leucine) and a similar mixture that is enriched in leucine (41% leucine). We determined muscle protein synthesis by calculating the incorporation rate of L-[ring-2H5]phenylalanine in the skeletal mixed muscle protein pool and muscle protein retention by measuring the leg arteriovenous net balance of phenylalanine.

Maintaining basal nitric oxide availability is the critical consideration in every area of healthcare. Perhaps it is time to appropriately define preventive and restorative medicines as the practice of ensuring NO availability. Neo40® exists as the only safe and effective NO donor technology in the world, created with substantiated science in a research setting (Texas Therapeutic Institute, UT School of Medicine at Houston) over 15 years. Neo40® is backed by 5 published peer-reviewed clinical trials and multiple patents. Many of our doctors are conducting case studies that demonstrate profound clinical improvements and several exciting new clinical trials are underway.
